Windows 98 is a heavily web-integrated operating system that bears numerous similarities to its predecessor, with most of the improvements being cosmetic or designed to improve the user experience, but there are a handful of features that enhance system functionality and capabilities. Like its predecessor, it is a hybrid 16-bit and 32-bit monolithic product with the boot stage based on MS-DOS. It is the successor to Windows 95, and was released to manufacturing on May 15, 1998, and generally to retail on June 25, 1998. I have also Disabled the Communications Ports 1 and 2, Printer port 1 via the Control Panel=> system => devices path on the VM.Windows 98 is an operating system developed by Microsoft as part of its Windows 9x family of Microsoft Windows operating systems. None of this output is particulary useful from a debugging point of view.

I have changed the Bios settings for Comm 1 and 2 to Disabled as if the are enabled or Auto I get extraneous messages arriving on the legacy Application output. The Monitoring application shows green for CTS, DSR, DCD on Com 3 and 4 but all RED on Comm 1 even though I can see the trafic arriving from my application.

I have had issues with the Win98 virtual machine when it comes to Comm port 1 (3 and 4 work fine). I have used KernalPro "Advanced Serial Comm Port" to create a pair of virtual Serial ports (1 and 9) connected via a virtual null modem cable. I am also monitoring these ports using the "Free Serial Port Monitor" application.įinally I am sending output from a C# application to Comm 9. These ports are Moxa usb to serial adaptors.

I am trying to get a Win98 VMWare VM set up to use Com ports 1, 3 and 4 from the host machine. The applications use Com Ports 1 (RS232 input) and 3 and 4 (RS422 output). I am trying to run a couple of legacy applications on a Windows 98 box.
